The N-3 Parka, introduced in the early 1950s, was developed by the U.S. Air Force as part of a series of extreme cold-weather clothing designed to protect personnel in frigid climates. It was a successor to the N-2B jacket, offering even more advanced insulation and weatherproofing for aircrew members and ground personnel stationed in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. The N-3 parka became standard issue for both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s, when military personnel operated in cold, exposed environments.
The N-3 Parka featured a durable, water-resistant nylon outer shell, providing superior protection from wind, rain, and snow. The interior was lined with thick, high-loft synthetic or down insulation for maximum warmth, while a fur-lined hood with a drawstring offered additional protection against the harsh winds. The parka’s design included ribbed knit cuffs, a storm flap over the front zipper, and large, functional pockets for storing equipment and personal items. The parka was typically olive drab or sage green, with a military-inspired utilitarian style.
The N-3 Parka became a popular item in civilian fashion after surplus military stock flooded the market in the 1960s. Its robust construction and distinctive, oversized look made it a favorite among urban youth, contributing to the lasting legacy of the parka as both functional outerwear and a stylish fashion statement.
